Are you looking for advice on organizing your home? You couldn't have timed better. Tidy interiors are my job. Having a home where everything is in its place allows you to free your mind, make your daily life easier, and create a cocoon where you feel good. In this article, I offer you a small anthology of my best tips (in bulk) to learn how to properly tidy and organize your home – those that I share the most to get rid of clutter for good!
Forget seasonal items to reduce clutter
My first piece of advice, the one I say over and over again: don't keep your useless items. Avoid storing or buying seasonal items that you only use once or twice a year and don't know what to do next.
Because the organization of the house also goes through the number of objects that we have. The more we keep, the more the mess is likely to set in. We don't know where to put this or that object, we put it there "while waiting", it piles up and we quickly let ourselves be overwhelmed.
When I talk about useless objects or seasonal objects, I think of the raclette machine for example, or tools such as drills, screwdrivers, sanders, etc.
Instead, consider an in-store rental. Or even better, ask your neighbors if you can borrow from them. And if you already have these objects, why not put them up for rent on Leboncoin or a neighborhood group, for example?
Involve the family in the organization of the house
I may be pushing an open door, but to keep a well-organized and tidy home, I invite you to involve your household if you live with several people (spouses, spouses, children, roommates, etc.).
Go around the house as a family, explain your organization to them, show them where everything is stored, but above all: ask them if it makes sense for them too! (Adjust if necessary.)
Yes, the organization of the house is not the same for everyone. We all have different habits, reflexes, desires, and needs. For the organization to be effective, it must meet all of these criteria.
Tidy up 5 minutes a day
Here is another essential piece of advice when I am asked about the organization of the house: tidy up 5 minutes a day.
It's super fast 5 minutes, so we avoid the painful and time-consuming side of a big storage session (which we tend to push back to later). However, we still restore order in our interior in an effective way.
Thus, the mess does not settle, the mind is not cluttered with household chores to add to the to-do list, and our house remains serene and pleasant.
I like to take a little trip to my house every evening. It's my tidying-up time. But do not hesitate to choose the timing that suits you best (in the morning before leaving for work, at lunch break while the meal is heating up, etc.).
Buy less to keep your house tidy
For me, an organized house, in which you feel good, is also a house that is not filled with new objects every week. It is a space that breathes, where possessions do not accumulate endlessly (sometimes without any real use).
This is somewhat related to my first advice.
To help you rethink your consumption, I suggest the BISOU method! She's awesome, she helps you ask yourself the right questions before you buy something new that's going to fit in your house and take up space (in your closets and your head).
What is the NISOU method? It is a tool to help you buy consciously thanks to its 5 letters:
N – as needed
I – like immediately
S – like similar
O – as an origin
U – as useful
Before giving in to a purchase, therefore, ask yourself these 5 questions:
do I need it?
do I need it immediately?
do I already have a similar object/clothing/furniture?
what is its origin? (ethical? ecological? …)
is it really useful?
If you hesitate or answer no to at least one of these questions, do not buy right away and give yourself time to think about it. Marketing plays a lot on the sense of urgency. On the other hand, if it is a clear yes every time, then go for it.
This mnemonic device is extremely effective in avoiding falling into overconsumption, and therefore, overloading our homes.
